IFR (1983 - Academy Software)
Platform: Commodore 64
Gametype: Undefined
_________________________

IFR is a flight simulator of Cessna 172RG Cutlass light aircraft. Due to limitations of early 1980s computers it doesn't offer external cockpit view, only an instrument panel (hence the name: Instrument Flight Rules) with full set of gauges: altimeter, tachometer, artificial horizon, airspeed, turn, and rate of climb indicators. The plane is also equipped with flaps, retractable landing gear, LORAN-C inertial navigation system, ILS and ADF (picking up 4 beacons and 2 airfields on the map).

The objective is to safely navigate between 4 airfields located on the map, while avoiding terrain obstacles etc. and within the aircraft fuel limit (~30 min.); the game flight model also includes stalls, wind and turbulence (difficulty level is adjustable).

From the Author :

"IFR wa a flight sim released on the Commodore 64 in 1983 "I think you could say it turned a liability into a virtue when it called itself an IFR simulator," Ed Brooks reported, " since it had no out the window graphics at all!

It's about as IFR as you can get. It's been a long time since I flew it but I still recall it was a rather strange experience. You followed yourself on a grid, and controlled your position by taking different headings. The idea was to fly at different altitudes, slip through narrow openings, make 90 degree turns to snake your way through, and land at different "airports" (which were just locations on the grid) by landing completely blind, with descent rate at touchdown determining whether it was a landing or a crash."

Description from the packaging:

An exciting real-time adventure in the sky!

Put yourself in the pilot's seat! This program provides a very challenging, realistic simulation of flying under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) in a single engine light plane. Take off, navigate over difficult terrain and fly an Instrument Landing System (ILS) approach to a landing. (Two of the four airports have ILS transmitters, along with refueling and repair facilities.) As your flight skills develop, you will also attempt landings at the non-ILS equipped airports. Then, to conserve fuel and to reach all the airports in the minimum time, you will fly a short cut through a narrow, twisting mountain pass to reach a refueling airport on the other side of a high mountain range. Plenty of thrills for pilots and non-pilots alike!

Use "Pause" to break for dinner, or to answer the phone, and later continue the flight with the touch of a key. "Edit" allows positioning of the aircraft anywhere on the course, particularly useful for instrument landing practice. Selectable wind and turbulence values enable the novice and the expert to set flying conditions suitable for their ability.

Flight tested by professional flight instructors and found to have very realistic aircraft response.
